Background:
Jackson Pollock’s career skyrocketed with his first solo exhibition at Peggy Guggenheim’s pioneering Art of This Century gallery (30 West 57th Street) in New York. Opening in November 1943, the exhibition—featuring his breakthrough painting The She-Wolf—established him as a leading figure in American Abstract Expressionism.The Art of This Century gallery, which operated from 1942 to 1947, was famous for its radical architectural design by Frederick Kiesler and for bridging the gap between European Surrealism and avant-garde American artists. This 1943 exhibition and subsequent shows in 1945 and 1947 gave Pollock the financial backing to transition to his legendary drip painting techniques.

In the decades following World War II, a new artistic vanguard emerged, particularly in New York, that introduced radical new directions in art. The war and its aftermath were at the underpinnings of the movement that became known as Abstract Expressionism. These artists, anxiously aware of human irrationality and vulnerability, expressed their concerns in an abstract art that chronicled the ardor and exigencies of modern life. Their heroic aspirations are most evident in Jackson Pollock‘s innovative “drip” paintings that forever altered the course of American art.
